The kids and I often spend our mornings at the Parent & Family Literacy Centre.  We recently did a fun rain cloud experiment!  The kids enjoyed it so much, we couldn’t wait to give it a try at home.

It’s incredibly simple to make and super fun to watch.  Here’s what you need:

  • Clear glass jar
  • Water
  • Shaving Cream
  • Food colouring

Shaving Cream Rain Experiment

First we discussed how it rains, how clouds form and where rain comes from.

Next, we filled our jar with water and sprayed some shaving cream on top.  We talked about how the shaving cream floated on the water like clouds and once we added some blue food colouring, it dripped through to the water like rain.

You can mix some food colouring and water in a bowl and let the kids use an eye dropper to squeeze it on top of the “clouds”.

This rain cloud experiment is educational, quick, easy and fun.  We got creative and added other colours.  We poured it out and did it a few more times to watch the colours mix and the kids enjoyed predicting what colours would be created.

  1. Quick & easy are the 2 key words that I like the most! Looks like a great experiment and simple enough that I think all my children will enjoy working. I love that you mixed some of the food colors together as well. 🙂 Thanks for sharing-pinned it!

    1. Hi Caroline! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 🙂 Yes, it’s SO quick and easy, we did it quite a few times. I hope your children enjoy it as much as mine do!
