January is a month of new beginnings:  goals, resolutions, thoughts, dreams etc.  What you do with that list greatly affects whether you will be successful in accomplishing them.  Sure the first month or two is exciting but how do you stay purposeful and disciplined in reaching those goals throughout the year?  While focusing on my daily habits and fine tuning my course of direction, I thought I would share my 10 steps to reach your goals!

10 steps to reach your goals

I never used to dream and I was believing a lie that resolutions were pointless and made to be broken.  Last year that mindset changed when God put indescribable desires in my heart.  They were dreams I could have never imagined on my own.  I was both excited and nervous to see them unfold.  He also led me down a path of discovering ways to make sure I completed those goals.  Here’s to a new year and the completion of new ones!

10 steps to reach your goals:

1.  Write it down.
It’s been said, a goal that isn’t written is worthless.  Writing it down is the first step in moving towards seeing it come to pass.  In fact, take the 21 day challenge! Consistency is key in forming new habits.  If you consistently write your goals for 21 days straight, it will help you keep focused.

2.  Declare it over your life.
Replace negative thoughts with positive ones.  ‘Death and life are in the power of the tongue’ (Prov. 18:21).  You CAN get out of debt.  You CAN lose 20 lbs.  Be the part!  If you just started running than you ARE a runner.  If you just published your first blog post, you ARE a blogger.

“If you believe the doubts in your mind you won’t achieve the dreams in your heart.” -Marinela Reka

3.  Set boundaries.
Schedule time to work towards your destiny…but also, schedule time to unwind to be refreshed and avoid burn-out.  Guard your time closely.  It’s valuable and you’re in total control of what you decide to do with it.

4.  30 minutes a day.
If you only spend 30 minutes a day working towards your target – that’s 3½ hours a week and 14 hours a month.  30 minutes is better than nothing.  Double it and spend an hour a day and that’s 28 hours per month!  By taking small steps daily you are still moving towards your target.

5.  Don’t wait for the perfect moment.
I can easily fall victim to this one.  I sometimes find myself putting things off until that perfect moment comes – which let’s be honest, rarely comes!  I need to schedule in what’s important to me.  If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.

Kevin Nelson – The Runner’s Book of Daily Inspiration.

6.  Don’t do things based on how you feel.
Take steps today with the result in mind – not based on how you presently feel.  Whether you’re feeling tired, fearful or just not in the mood, decide NOW that you won’t let your feelings dictate your future.

YOU create your own opportunities

7.  Be accountable.
Share your intentions with someone you’re close to – a like-minded family member, friend etc.  By openly acknowledging and disclosing your goals to someone you are more likely to follow through.

8.  Seek God.
Pray and let God take the lead.  “Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (Prov 3:6)  Let the joy of the Lord be your strength.

9.  Slow and steady wins the race.
Invest time in researching, reading, learning, training etc.  “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

10.  Be realistic.
Challenge yourself by having realistic milestones in mind.  Don’t set yourself up for disappointment with unattainable expectations and standards.  Replace them with purposeful steps towards your end result.

I pray you have your best year yet! An exciting year filled with testimonies of overcoming obstacles and fulfilling all God has planned for you.  Approach this year with these 10 steps to reach your goals and see where it leads you!  Refuse to stay complacent.
